The main issue I had with this movie is the fact that his downfall comes when he is caught saying how much he hates his audience on camera. Only because Trump is dripping with contempt for his fans and he's still the frontrunner.

Yeah, I didn't want to mention that because I didn't want to give away the end of the movie but I kind of alluded to it in the first paragraph. Matthau's speech to him about how he will make a modest comeback kind of makes up for it but not really. Then again, it was 1957; people got angry with The Beatles in the next decade when Lennon said they were more popular than Jesus so people might not have tolerated being insulted as much as they do to-day.
